Until the temporary building in Delitzsch and its own research buildings at the two permanent locations in Delitzsch and Merseburg are ready for occupancy, the Center for the Transformation of Chemistry (CTC) has temporarily rented space on the BioCity Campus in Leipzig. In the new City Lab Leipzig (CLL) building, laboratory and office space for up to 80 scientists will be created in the coming months. This will enable the CTC to expand its research into the circular economy in chemistry and attract further high-caliber researchers. The CTC will retain its headquarters in Delitzsch.
Since December 15, 2025, the Center for the Transformation of Chemistry has been renting temporary laboratory and office space on the BioCity Campus in Leipzig. The City Lab Leipzig at Puschstraße 6b will provide space for up to 80 CTC employees from the research and transfer departments. The first 25 employees will move into the offices at the beginning of 2026. The city of Leipzig is supporting the necessary expansion work for the laboratory space.
“The move into and expansion of the laboratories in 2026 is an important milestone for CTC. It will enable us to create the infrastructure necessary for our scientific team to implement the research projects planned over the last two years to transform chemistry into a circular economy,” explains Lars Reinhold, Construction Project Manager at CTC.
“In total, CTC has around 3,000 square meters of space available on four floors at its temporary location in Leipzig. This space will increase in the coming years with the addition of premises at the permanent locations in Delitzsch and Merseburg.”
Meanwhile, the CTC is moving forward with plans for the two permanent locations in Delitzsch and Merseburg. At the main location in Delitzsch, a CTC campus dedicated to offices and laboratories for up to 700 people will be built on the site of the former sugar factory on Richard-Wagner-Straße in the coming years. Construction project planning is scheduled to begin in 2026. The first construction phase is planned for 2028 to 2030. Until its own buildings are ready for occupancy, the CTC will rent a new building on the former sugar factory site. The Chemistry Innovation Lab (CIL) with office and laboratory space for 150 employees is being built by the CTC special-purpose association, which consists of the district of Northern Saxony and the City of Delitzsch. Completion is expected by 2028. Currently, the CTC uses rented premises in the Delitzsch district office for its administrative staff.
A second campus is planned at Merseburg University of Applied Sciences. It will provide space for around 300 employees in the future. Several construction phases are planned to build a coherent complex consisting of several building sections by the end of 2030. This will enable modern working and research conditions. Currently, the CTC is housed in temporary premises and uses office space in the main building of the adjacent Leuna Chemical Park.
