Now it is certain – the Center for the Transformation of Chemistry (CTC) will be located in Merseburg – alongside Delitzsch in northern Saxony. This was announced by CTC founding director Prof. Dr. Peter Seeberger and Saxony-Anhalt’s Minister of Science Prof. Dr. Armin Willingmann on Wednesday, February 14th, at Merseburg University of Applied Sciences. “We have reached a major milestone with the final decision for both CTC locations,” explained Seeberger. “With the university and direct connections to numerous companies in and around the Leuna Chemical Park, Merseburg offers ideal conditions for future research and cooperation between science, industry and the region.”
Science Minister Willingmann emphasized: “The establishment of the second CTC site in Merseburg is great news for Saxony-Anhalt as a science and business location. The large-scale research center will provide important impetus for the transformation of the chemical industry in the south of the state, particularly with regard to the development of a sustainable circular economy. The close connection between the CTC and Merseburg University of Applied Sciences will accelerate the development of new technologies and facilitate their transfer to industry. The location, with its great tradition and promising future, is therefore the perfect choice.”
Over the next years, the CTC will bring considerable added value and numerous jobs to the region. By 2038, about 300 people with a wide range of skills are expected to be working at the CTC in Merseburg. In addition, the aim is to attract further skilled workers for whom cooperation with the CTC is attractive and who will settle here accordingly. “We now have a basis for making decisions on further developments, buildings and infrastructure and are starting research on our own projects in parallel – because the implementation of research is our central task,” Seeberger continued. The federal government is providing a total of around one billion euros for the construction of the CTC.
