On September 30, 2022, the BMBF and the states of Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt announced as part of the initiative “Knowledge creates perspectives for the region!” that the Center for the Transformation of Chemistry (CTC) is to be established as a new independent large-scale research center of around 1,000 employees in the Central German mining region. The CTC’s goal is to contribute to the long-term strengthening of Germany as a location for science and innovation through new managerial and thematic structures and to promote the sustainable development of the region through close networking with regional universities, companies and investors.

The CTC will strive for a circular economy with sustainable chemistry as its foundation, using a transdisciplinary approach with structured cooperation between academia, industry and the local communities. The large-scale research center will strengthen the entire innovation region affected by the coal exit, and will offer completely new development perspectives. The main campus will be located on the site of the former sugar factory in Delitzsch, with a satellite campus in Saxony-Anhalt.
