The establishment of the CTC as a new research center in Central Germany started in 2023 – initially as a project at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces. From 2026, the CTC will be an independent research institution.
To this end, the Federal Republic of Germany, the Free State of Saxony, and the State of Saxony-Anhalt, have founded an independent organization: CTC gGmbH. The non-profit company with the purpose to promote research and development in the field of chemistry, was entered in the trade register of Leipzig on November 3, 2025. In January 2026, the CTC team, which has grown to almost 70 people, will transfer to the CTC gGmbH. Besides the CTC, another research center has been newly established: the German Centre for Astrophysics in Görlitz, Saxony.
Federal Research Minister Dorothee Bär explains:
“The establishment of the two new research centers will boost Germany’s position as a place for scientific excellence. Together with the Free State of Saxony and the State of Saxony-Anhalt, we will set new international standards in chemistry and astrophysics.
The Center for the Transformation of Chemistry is rethinking fundamental approaches to chemistry in order to establish the use of renewable feedstocks and recycling in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. The research center combines groundbreaking basic research, application-oriented research, and cooperation with industry. In doing so, it also makes an important contribution to the goals of Germany’s High-Tech Agenda.”
CTC founding director Prof. Dr. Dr. hc Peter Seeberger explains:
“With the CTC, we want to tackle the generational task of transforming chemistry into a circular economy. We will only succeed in this if we combine excellent basic research with its transfer into application. As an independent research institution, we can structurally anchor this approach. The entry in the commercial register is an important step for the further development of the CTC.”
Sebastian Gemkow, Minister of Science of the Free State of Saxony, comments on the founding of the CTC:
“The entry in the trade register combines independence for the successful further growth of the CTC on the one hand and responsibility for its staff, accommodation, and research work on the other. The research center based in Delitzsch will be developed into an excellent research institution with global visibility and, at the same time, a driver of innovation and economic growth in the regions of structural change in Central Germany. We will continue to accompany and support the CTC team to the best of our ability.”
The Minister of Science of the State of Saxony-Anhalt, Prof. Dr. Armin Willingmann, said of the founding of the CTC:
“Progress requires research. With the CTC, we are setting the course for greater sustainability and thus for the future viability of our chemical industry. The new flagship for cutting-edge research and technology transfer in Central Germany is an incredible opportunity for science and industry in Saxony-Anhalt.”
